At least 17 people have died after a bus carrying construction workers fell off a pier and plunged into the Black Sea in southern Russia.

There were 50 people on board and 33 were rescued by scuba divers, according to the latest update from Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry.

Eight people are in hospital, five of them in a serious condition.

The bus was carrying workers from their shift building a pier for the Tamanneftegaz oil company.

It happened outside the town of Volna on the Taman peninsula - just across the sea from Crimea.

The cause is so far unconfirmed but local authorities said they suspected the bus' brakes were faulty.
