The England women's rugby team missed out on a private tour of Windsor Castle after their coach broke down - but still managed to squeeze in a reception with the Princess of Wales.

Kate hosted the winning women's rugby squad, with the World Cup trophy taking centre stage at a reception celebrating their win.

The royal followed the team's campaign as patron of the Rugby Football Union, watching from the stands when they beat Australia in Brighton in a pool match.

She even joined the players when they held a celebratory sing-song in the changing rooms.

In the final, the Red Roses beat Canada 33-13 in front of a record 81,885 spectators who filled a sold-out Twickenham - a third World Cup victory following victories in 2014 and 1994.

Among the guests were captain Zoe Stratford, double Rugby World Cup winner Marlie Packer, and head coach John Mitchell - all OBE recipients in the New Year Honours.

They were joined by vice-captain Megan Jones, standout back row Sadia Kabeya and Sports Personality of the Year nominee Ellie Kildunne, who received MBE awards.

'It's a chance to redefine women’s rugby'

The Prince and Princess of Wales were among the first to congratulate the Red Roses on their World Cup victory in September, also praising Canada, in a post that said: "You had an outstanding tournament. Both teams should be so proud!"

Ahead of the final, the royals shared a photo of the princess and some of the teammates in cowboy hats.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also praised the team, saying: "You have shown the very best of England and inspired a generation."

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch called it an "incredible performance", and added: "A proud moment for English rugby and for our country."
