Four policemen have been killed in a shoot-out with gunmen near the city of Karak in Jordan.

Heavy fire broke out between officers and men who police said were "wanted" in connection with the deaths of 10 people in a series of ambushes earlier this week.

Several of the men were killed and a number of others arrested after the firefight, official news agency Petra reported.

State media said police officers came under fire during a raid on a suspected hideout of fugitives linked to Sunday's shootings, which were claimed by Islamic State (IS).

In a statement, the general security department said the operation centred around a house in the city.

Police were fired at by the suspects as they surrounded the home, officials said.

The shootings on Sunday were the bloodiest in Jordan in recent memory and raised new concerns about the rise of Islamic militancy in the pro-Western kingdom.

IS said the attack was revenge for US-led coalition airstrikes targeting militants in Syria and Iraq.
