That's all for now

That's all for now of our live coverage of the latest developments from Minneapolis, where two US citizens have been killed in three weeks by federal agents.

Today, the White House continued its relatively more moderate position after Alex Pretti was shot and killed on Saturday by federal agents.

This followed an ICE agent killing Renee Good on 7 January.

Despite initially defiant responses, accusing both Good and Pretti of wrongdoing, the White House now seems to have shifted its position as it struggles to grapple with the fallout from the killings.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump said he was going to "de-escalate" Minneapolis, but stressed this was "not a pullback but a change".

One tangible change the White House has made is sidelining Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino in favour of Trump's border tsar Tom Homan, letting him take control of federal immigration efforts in Minnesota.

The administration has also spoken to and met with key Democratic officials in the state.

But a local attorney general warned the federal government needed to prove it was helping with actions and not just words.

Scroll down to catch up in full and we'll be back with any major developments.

Trump suggests Border Patrol commander pulled from Minneapolis 'a pretty out there kind of guy'

Before Trump's rally in Iowa, he spoke to Fox News about his immigration crackdown in Minneapolis.

'He's a pretty out there kind of guy'

In the interview, Trump spoke about Gregory Bovino, the Border Patrol commander his administration has sidelined in favour of border tsar Tom Homan, saying:

"Bovino is very good, but he's a pretty out there kind of guy. And in some cases, that's good. Maybe it wasn't good here."

He also claimed that the parents of Renee Good, the first person killed by the ICE agents he sent into Minneapolis on 7 January, supported him, making him feel "even worse" about her death.

"I'm not sure about his parents, but I know her parents were big Trump fans. Makes me feel bad anyway. But I mean, I guess you could say even worse."

Two Republican senators call for Kristi Noem to resign

We've heard plenty from Democrats who want Donald Trump's homeland security secretary to go in recent days - but now we've got Republicans making the same call.

Thom Tillis and Lisa Murkowski have become the first senators from the president's party to say Kristi Noem should go.

Asked if he had confidence in Noem, Tillis told reporters on Capitol Hill: "No, not at all. I think she should go."

Murkowsk said it was "probably time for her to step down."

Boy, 5, detained in Minnesota by immigration officers cannot be removed, judge rules

A federal judge has issued a temporary order banning the removal of a five-year-old boy and his father who were detained in Minnesota last week.

The incident was another lightning rod of division in the US during the recent unrest in Minnesota.

US Judge Fred Biery ruled Monday that any removal or transfer of five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, is on hold while a court case proceeds.

The father and son are now at a family detention facility in Dilley, Texas.

The pair were arrested last week outside their home in Minnesota, with neighbours and school officials claiming that federal immigration officers used the young boy as "bait" by telling him to knock on the door to his home so his mother would answer.

The Department of Homeland Security has called this description of events an "abject lie".

Instead, it claims the father fled on foot and left the boy in a running vehicle in their driveway.

Two federal officers fired shots during encounter with Alex Pretti - report

Trump is still speaking in Clive, Iowa, but sidestepping that for a moment, here's some breaking news:

Two federal officers fired shots during their encounter with Alex Pretti that led to his death, AP news agency reports.

It cites a notice from the US Department of Homeland Security to Congress.

Initially, it was thought that just one agent had fired their weapon.

The notice reportedly says that one Border Patrol officer fired his Glock and a Customs Border Protection (CBP) officer also fired their weapon.

Investigators from CBP's Office of Professional Responsibility conducted the analysis based on a review of body-worn camera footage and agency documentation, the notice reportedly says.

One official reportedly says in the notice that officers tried to take Pretti into custody and he resisted, leading to a struggle, during which one agent shouted: "He's got a gun!" multiple times.

Trump runs through the classics in Iowa - what's behind his economy claims?

So far, Donald Trump has run through some of his most familiar talking points at his speech in Iowa.

This includes claims about his predecessor Joe Biden, immigration in the US, the economy, the US standing on the global stage and more.

Let's take one of those topics here and dig a bit deeper into it.

Cost of living

"We inherited such a horrible situation with all of the high prices and inflation and everything else."

This is what Trump has said in the early remarks of his speech in Clive, Iowa, claiming to have brought both prices and inflation down.

However, inflation figures suggest it isn't quite as simple as that.

As of the end of his first year back in office, the inflation figures are about the same as when he came back into power.

That's after the figures fell before the end of Joe Biden's presidency. It is also not true that the Biden era gave the country its worst inflation ever, AP news agency reports.

The consumer price index was 3% in September, the same rate as in last January, a tick up from 2.9% in December, which was Biden's last full month in office.

Similarly, US consumers are still feeling the pinch of higher prices, with a November poll by AP-NORC showing the vast majority of US adults saying they have noticed higher prices than usual for groceries, electricity and holiday presents.

Under Biden, inflation peaked at 9.1% in June 2022. That was a consequence of supply chain interruptions, potentially excessive amounts of government aid and Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine driving up food and energy costs.

But even then, the US has known even worse and more sustained inflation than that. It was higher than 13% in 1980. By some estimates, inflation was near 20% during the First World War.

While inflation had been falling over the first few months of Trump's presidency, it picked back up after he announced his first major wave of tariffs last April.

Trump takes the stage

Authorities release man whose case led to judge ordering ICE chief to appear in court

We're still waiting for Trump to take the stage, with state Republicans speaking ahead of him - so here's some more news.

Authorities have released a man whose case led to a judge in Minneapolis ordering the head of ICE to appear in court.

Attorney Graham Ojala-Barbour says the Ecuadorian man, who is identified in court documents as Juan T.R., was released in Texas.

Ojala-Barbour tells The Associated Press news agency that he was notified of the release in an email from the US attorney's office in Minneapolis shortly after 1pm CT (shortly after 7pm UK time).

In our 13.38 post, we brought you the news that Chief Judge Patrick J Schiltz had ordered the head of ICE to appear before him on Friday to explain why he shouldn't be held in contempt.
