Sir Alex Ferguson has been honoured on his return to Old Trafford for the first time since he suffered a brain haemorrhage in May.
The club encouraged fans to be in their seats 15 minutes before kick-off to cheer the former manager.
Regarded by many as the greatest manager of all time, Sir Alex said he was overwhelmed by the support shown to him by fans while he was recovering after having emergency surgery.
Messages of support from the world of football and beyond poured in for the 76-year-old Scot following news that he was in intensive care.
Ex-United star Cristiano Ronaldo told his former manager to "be strong", while David Beckham urged his ex-boss to "keep fighting".
Sir Alex was watching Manchester United play against Wolves from his usual seat in the directors' box this afternoon. He said he was taking some of the doctors who treated him as special guests.
Sir Alex had appeared on the pitch at Old Trafford a week before he was rushed to hospital, to present outgoing Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger - his long-time rival - with a trophy recognising his career.
The Scot retired from managing United in 2013 after 26 years in charge and remains the most successful manager in British football history.
During his time at Old Trafford, he won 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League crowns, five FA Cups and four League Cups.
Manchester United favourite Peter Schmeichel and Michael Carrick tweeted to celebrate their former manager's return.
Speaking to the club's in-house television arm, Sir Alex joked: "I don't miss this! This is the pressure, having these press guys with stupid questions!
"No, it's great to go back to the stadium and it's going to be quite emotional for me when the game starts, things like that.
"It had to happen some time and I've been looking forward to it. It was important getting the right time and the right rest before coming to a game."
Manchester United drew against Wolves after winning two away games in a row in the league, and after running out victorious against Young Boys in the first game of the Champions League group stage.
