Winning US Powerball ticket bought in Indiana worth £349m

A lucky gambler in Indiana has been confirmed as one of the biggest winners in US Powerball history.

The winner, who has not been identified, won the $435m (£348.92m) jackpot on Wednesday with the numbers 52, 10, 61, 28 and 13, along with a Powerball number of 2.

According to the lottery's website, the amount is the seventh-largest jackpot in the game's history and the odds of winning it were one in 292,201,338.

Powerball's jackpot grew to a record $1.6bn (£1.28bn) in January last year when three winning tickets were sold in Tennessee, California and Florida.

The size of the jackpots assume that the winner will take the prize in annuity payments spread over 29 years.

Most, however, decide to take a smaller lump sum.

If Wednesday's winner does this, he or she will be looking at a prize of around $244m (£196m).

Powerball tickets are sold in 44 states and Washington DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, with half of sales revenue going to prizes.

Around 40% goes to state governments, while the remaining 10% goes to the retailers who sell tickets and other administration costs.

The top prize will now drop back to $40m (£32m) on Saturday night.
