Police are investigating after human bones were found in the grounds of Edinburgh University halls.

The grisly discovery was made in the grounds of the Pollock student halls, close to royal Holyrood Park and the Scottish parliament building.

Police were notified at around 2.50pm on Wednesday and have since cordoned off the immediate area for forensics to survey the scene.

Officers are guarding the entrance to the halls, which remain taped off.

The bones were removed by forensics and will now be sent for examination.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "At around 2.50pm on Wednesday 26 September, police in Edinburgh received a report of bones being found within the grounds of Pollock Halls.

"Officers attended and the items will undergo further examination.

"Inquiries are ongoing."

It is understood that students are in residence, but will not be disrupted.

A spokesperson for the University of Edinburgh said: "This matter is in the early stages. Our priority is to work closely with police and provide them with every assistance in their investigations."
